Bologna is a kaleidoscopic, cosmopolitan and creative city. It is located in the heart of Emilia Romagna and winds through miles of porticoes, medieval towers and elegant squares. Known as the “Red City” because of the color of its roofs and facades, this gives it a welcoming and warm appearance. Besides being one of the oldest cities in Italy with a history dating back to Etruscan and Roman times, the city is famous for its university, one of the oldest in Europe. THE TWO TOWERS: GARISENDA AND DEGLI ASINELLI
The towers, located in the heart of the city, are the most iconic symbols of Bologna. The Asinelli Tower and the Garisenda Tower, were designed for a military function and represented the social prestige of the family that had them built. Both from the medieval period are masterpieces of architecture and engineering. Still outlining Bologna’s true identity and enterprising spirit, their view is part of the everyday life of the Bolognese who regard them as the guardians of the city. The two towers are iconic as they represent the true resilience of the city of Bologna and the people of Bologna who have survived wars, fires and earthquakes.
PIAZZA MAGGIORE
Piazza Maggiore represents the vibrant heart of the city of Bologna, a historic and fascinating square that played a fundamental role in the lives of its citizens. Surrounded by historic monuments and buildings of great importance such as the majestic Basilica of San Petronio, the Palazzo dei Notai, the Palazzo d’Accursio, the Palazzo del Podestà and the Palazzo dei Banchi. In the center of the square stands the Fountain of Neptune, a Renaissance sculpture depicting the god Neptune, created by Giambologna in the 16th century. The square is a place of history, art, culture and great conviviality.
BASILICA OF PETRONIO
The majestic Basilica of San Petronio, considered a true jewel of Gothic architecture, is located in Piazza Maggiore. Its impressive size classifies it as the sixth largest church in the world. The construction, dedicated to the patron Saint Petronio, began in 1390 and was never completely finished. In fact, the facade remains incomplete to this day giving it an earthy and fascinating atmosphere. The interior is magnificent with an extraordinary central nave and numerous works of art, sculptures and stained glass windows.
